Welcome Back Guardians

By: Luis Benavides Jr.

The day has finally come!!!! All of the rumors and misinformation gets set straight. Today Bungie revealed some much needed gameplay and new features that will change the game that some of us love and others have hated with a passion. There’s no denying that if you played from day one like I have, we have seen the good, bad, and downright unbearable. With raid’s being broken, the crucible being unfair, trials being brutal for solo players like myself, and other modes just unpleasant to play Destiny really didn’t last for some players. But let’s get into some of the great things that Bungie revealed that has me ready to go preorder and get back into the world of Destiny.

First of all, let’s start with the campaign. With the cinematic trailer for the campaign we get a better understanding of which direction we will be mainly exploring. With that let me tell you some of the key points showed. The city is taken, the speaker dead, the connection to the light gone and last all the vaults are lost. That’s right, ALL VAULTS LOST!!! The campaign trailer did an excellent job with diving a little more into the newest threat that has come to earth.

Next the team at Bungie revealed some of the new tools and features that will make images[1]Destiny 2 standout and really shine. One of these new features is better clan tools and support through the console. Items like custom banners and content will be unlockable while in a clan. They really didn’t give too much away with exactly what kind of content will be unlocked, but one can assume that will include weapons, armor, and shaders. One new feature that I’m really excited for is a mode/tool called Guided Games. Now here’s how this works, let’s say you get all of your clan members on at the same time for a raid. Just put the raid or event in this option and you’ll be able to find that missing person or persons so you can still enjoy the raid. This will benefit solo players like me in a way to connect and be a part of content like raid and trials. Which, I played very little of the raids and trails, and it’s very rare when I had other people to play with.

Now, some of the even bigger news is Destiny is going to PC. We did get some more intel on what will be new to the PC port. Destiny 2 will be available through the battle.net exclusively. So don’t be surprised if we see some Blizzard and Bungie crossed products at some point. But the news that Bungie and Blizzard have joined together for this is truly groundbreaking. I can’t wait to see the content and server performance that comes with such a partnership

To find out more of the little details that was covered on the live stream on

With everything that was discussed and shown with the reveal I can’t wait to get back into the fight. Don’t forget to go preorder your copy to get access to the beta this summer.

Gaming Event of Awesomeness

Image result for go games 360Thankfully, with all the advancements in technology, we have seen some real innovations in the world of video gaming. With the push of VR from independent publishers like Sony and Microsoft, and 4k TV’s and ultra-high resolution reaching an affordable level, we are now seeing the most amazing visuals in the history of video games.

The GoGames360 40 hour Gaming Marathon will showcase such advancements to the public in a friendly convention style setting. This will be an amazing opportunity since the general public doesn’t get hands-on experience with anything VR unless they’re purchasing it from Amazon or your local electronic store. This event will also feature gaming from every shade of the spectrum. From the high tech of VR to the low tech of TCG’S (trading card games), and pen and paper. A gaming event of this magnitude has never occurred in Image result for go games 360Houston, So as a casual (and occasional competitive) gamer, this is a welcomed event.

The event will feature LAN gaming for the PC gamers and console players to compete head to head and will feature cash tournaments for team and fighting games. GoGames360 will also have plenty of Image result for go games 360events for the “non-gamer” including a cosplay runway fashion show, costume contest, and a play and gaming area for the kids. Physical gaming will also have a spot reserved in the limelight of the event. Laser tag, archery, and Quidditch are just a few physical activities that will be available.

Another item to note is the charity that GoGames360 is already doing in the Houston area. 50% of online ticket sales will go to benefit the Covenant House Texas, a charity group that strives to get our homeless youths off the street. Their website clearly states their purpose…

Covenant House Texas (CHT) opened its doors in 1983 to provide shelter for homeless, abused and abandoned youth ages 18 – 20. After more than 30 years of service, CHT is still one of the only service providers in Texas of its type, offering an extensive continuum of care to the homeless youth population in Houston/Harris County.

Many of those youths are receiving complementary passes to come to the event. And, not to meet a charity and not help, The Nerdery will be donating a large amount of books from The Nerdery Vault!!!

The purchase of a three day past it will allow you to camp out at the complex and allows you to get a second one FREE!!. Single day passes are available for those just looking to see and experience the event and get a feel for an event this size. This is a phenomenal chance to expand your gaming experience and meet some awesome people. Making new friends, expanding your knowledge of gaming, and interacting with others that share your passion is always an amazing feeling. With live entertainment going on during the event everyone gets a chance to take a break from all the activities and just enjoy great music and food.

Tournaments will be available to individuals and teams and all but video game tournament fees are included in the ticket price. Anime Angels Runway show & Balentines Cosplay Ball presented by Cosplay Vogue will feature DJ Woody and Karaoke on Saturday from 10pm to 1am.

This event is shaping up to be an awesome change of pace for the heavy con goer, and is a little more like a festival/convention. With it bringing in the outdoor and camping aspect, it’s a pretty awesome way to keep everyone active. I’m personally pumped for an event of this kind and magnitude. Being able to watch Quidditch seems like an awesome event and  I’m greatly looking forward to it. I’m also looking forward to being to compete on a grand stage again, which I haven’t done for many. I’ll be ecstatic to see the Houston gaming community come out and make this event successful so we may have many more to come. I and everyone else at The Nerdery hope to see you there and game together.

As a longtime fan of Microsoft’s Xbox, it hasn’t exactly been easy to stay true to Microsoft. I had the best experience with the Xbox 360 from launch day 2005 until pretty much the end of the consoles reign. Microsoft had hit a stride that Sony just couldn’t catch up to with its PS3. Then E3 2013 hit, and Xbox took a metaphoric dump on all their fans. Announcing The Xbox One not only had to have an internet connection, but it absolutely required the Kinect hardware. They also added you wouldn’t be able to borrow or rent disc based games, and that digital rights management would lock each game to the buyer.

The next day Sony took the stage, and began gaining all of Microsoft’s ostracized fans. Sony announced that not only would its new system the PlayStation 4 be based on X86 architecture (a computer based architecture that’s easy to program for) but that disc based games would be able to play from any official game source. They laughed at the thought of having to be connected to the internet and said the system would work regardless of online capabilities. It didn’t take long for Microsoft to back pedal and change every policy they had just deemed permanent. The damage had been done. PlayStation 4 outsold Xbox One for two years straight and Sony had begun a journey towards total domination.

Fast forward to September 7th, 2016, we are now in what most people call the midlife of both consoles. Microsoft has already released Xbox One S, a new slim version capable of not only playing 4K Blu-Ray discs, but displaying 4K video with high dynamic range on compatible televisions. Sony then decides to debut a slim version of the current PlayStation 4, and a new more powerful version titled the PlayStation 4 Pro. Surely this device would have everything the Xbox One S has and more right?

Not exactly.

Sony has decided to Overclock the processor a bit, and include a better GPU capable of 4K gaming, 4K streaming, and HDR to compatible Televisions. Where are the 4 K Blu-Ray players I was hoping for? It seems Sony missed that opportunity, while focusing on the gaming experience. Obviously gaming is the priority here, but that’s with any game console. For a company that helped pioneer Blu-Ray disc, it Image result for 4k blu rayseems odd to not have 4K playback at launch. When you dominate the market for two years, what makes you say, “Hey maybe we should hold back”? The PlayStation 4 is beefed up only slightly, and that’s just for added power necessary for PlayStation VR when it arrives.

Image result for xbox scorpioMicrosoft is already working on its next Xbox currently titled project Scorpio. Many are saying it will be a modular design similar to a PC, and while it seems far fetched, it’s nice to see a company fighting back for the crown they once had. Sony did manage to throw their fans a bone, by upgrading every PlayStation unit from the launch models to the current units with HDR via a software update due this month. Maybe they’ll secretly allow 4 K Blu-Ray playbacks through a software update, but until then I’ll stick with the launch models I waited so patiently for.

Warframe War Within

By: JD Hardin

The guys at Digital Extremes are back at it again. Not long ago, DE released The Second Dream mission set to Warframe players and received excellent reviews. Last month, Digital Extremes hosted their own convention, TennoCon, in London, Ontario Canada near their home office. All the attendees got a sneak peak into what’s up their sleeve with Warframe.

For those who don’t know what Warframe is, here’s the original trailer.

As players, we were stoked when The Second Dream mission set was released. The Second Dream finally confirmed where the Tenno and Warframes came from, and what they had to do with the Orokin.

Warframe’s first cinematic mission set was a massive success and set players on the warpath wanting it available for replay (including myself). As soon as most players finished watching the last cinematic, they immediately wanted to know what was next. A few months later and DE answered by giving us Lunaro.

A Lacrosse game that pits Tenno vs Tenno in two teams, Lunaro was not what most players expected to come next. But, it was enough to keep us interested and playing.

As of TennoCon, all players have something to be excited about. Teshin is up to something. Don’t believe me, take a look.

So, let’s walk through this real slow. Teshin, the Orokin survivor who assists in training the Tenno (as far as I can tell), is possibly turning traitor?

Wow! I can’t wait for this to come out.

Digital Extremes also teased an animated series entitled 100 Days of Warframe.

The arrival of a new fairy inspired Warframe debuted to gasps and ooh’s and ah’s.  After watching this profile video, I can see why

So, if you’re not playing Warframe. You’re missing out.

The DC Universe is HUGE!

By: JD Hardin

So, I initially reviewed this on the show (CLICK HERE TO WATCH), and it did’t get a very good rating. There were good reasons for the lack of capes, and most of those have been remedied. First, however, I will go back over the issues I had with the new open-world “freemium” game from DC.

I was initially very excited when I found out that DC Online was crossing to XBox One. I had a blast creating my hero. It was a little confusing at first, but I got the hang of it very quickly. I finished my character and proceeded to enter the game itself, and that’s when it happened…

WARFRAME: The Second Dream

By: JD Hardin

For those of you who don’t listen to the podcast (or view depending on how old this article is when you read it), I am a Warframe player. Some may remember the game DarkSector for XBox360, PlayStation 3, and PC. If you ever got the chance to play it, consider Warframe a continuation that takes place thousands of years after the events of DarkSector.

Wikipedia classifies Warframe as such:

“Warframe is a free-to-play cooperative third-person shooter video game developed by Digital Extremes for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Equipment can be earned through gameplay or bought with premium currency called Platinum. Most cosmetics and boosts can only be purchased with platinum, though some items are available from other sources. The game is free to download and play.

In Warframe, players control members of the Tenno, a race of ancient warriors who have awoken from centuries of cryosleep to find themselves at war with the Grineer, a race of militarized human clones; the Corpus, a mega-corporation with advanced robotics and laser technology; the Infested, disfigured victims of the Technocyte infection; and The Sentients a race of machines, that were the chief enemies of the Orokin’s during the Old War. To fight back, the Tenno use advanced exo-armor with unique abilities—the eponymous Warframes. Available missions are scattered across the planets of the solar system, the moons Phobos and Europa and dwarf planets Pluto, Ceres, Eris and Sedna. Additionally, players can also access missions set in a pocket dimension known as “The Orokin Void” or “The Orokin Derelict” through the use of keys.”

Here recently Digital Exremes released a new quest for Warframe, The Second Dream. TSD is the first cinematic quest since Warframe initially released on March 25, 2013.

Having played through quite a few missions, it’s positively breathtaking. The graphics are stunning as always, the cut scenes are powerfully ominous and foreboding. As a seasoned player, the opening cut scene is quite terrifying.

Even those who don’t play can sense the palpable danger and difficulty of this quest.

The story is one of mystery and secrets, each mission exposing one or more. The opponent is quick, deadly, and near unfazed by Tenno attacks and Warframe abilities. As far as the ending goes, I’ll let you know when I get there.

For those of you who play Warframe, this is the quest we’ve all been waiting for. Those of you who don’t play, it would seem you should reconsider.
